Idiomatic Expressions

1- Smell a Rat

***How come the front door is opened? Didn't  you close it before we went shopping?
___I'm sure I did. I can't understand it. Frankly, I smell a rat.
***Me, too. I'm convinced that something is definitely wrong here. We'd better call the police.

**** When somebody smells a rat actually he knows that something it's wrong.  For instance, Suzana told you that she should arrive home around 8pm but it's almost 9 and she didn't make a call yet. Suzana likes things working like clockwork. It smells a rat! Something is definitely wrong.

.............................................................................................

2- Let the cat out of the Bag

J.B.was going to retire from teaching in June, and the students were planning on doing a big party to celebrate his career.  He wasn't supposed to know about it, but someone let the cat out of the bag. At the party J.B acted surprised, even though someone had told him what he was getting before the celebration..

**** There are people that can't keep a secret. You better don't tell them anything. Their tongues are bigger than their minds. If you tell them you really told to the world.

              .................................................................................................................
3- Straight From the Horse's Mouth

*** Hey Anselmo, how did you find out that I was engaged?
___ I got the information from a very reliable source.
***You mean Andrelina told you so herself?
___That's right. I got it straight from the horse's mouth!

***  Who told you that? This is the question when you know that your secret was discovered. There are many ways for you getting a information. You can get it by reading the newspaper or listening to the radio, or talking to a friend ...and on. But when you know it straight from the source ...your source is totally reliable ...just because you got it straight from the horse's mouth.
