Tuesday - September 30th

............................................
*My third phrasal verb is "run out of"..and you want to be very careful how you use this! In many different languages , run out of is equivalent to finish or end. However , in English we do not say it like that. When we have no supply of something , as in my example, I ran out of telephone tokens. Then you would not say :"the telephone tokens are finished".You would say : " I ran out of telephone tokens" , other kinds of supply:
*I ran out of paper
*I ran out of money
*I ran out of milk.
........................................
*My fourth phrasal verb is "run something by someone". In this case you are simply asking for someone to repeat something. So you can ask , sorry ...can you run that by me again?. This simply means to repeat something and it's a very popular expression here in North America.A very very popular question.

wednesday class/ August - 19th

*How's the weather treating you?

*Hello Anselmo! How's the weather treating you?
**Hi teacher, the weather is good because I like the winter.

*How's the weather like today in the USA?

**How's the weather be like today in the USA?

A tradução e o sentido será a mesma. A pergunta será sempre "Como está o tempo /temperatura hoje?"

*How was the weather like yesterday?

*How will the weather be like tomorrow?

#O verbo to be no passado quando se refere á terceira pessoa é WAS.
#O auxiliar que indica frases no futuro simples é WILL.

*it's cloudy = está nublado
*it was cloudy = estava nublado
*it will be cloudy = estará nublado

*it's rainny = está chuvoso
*it was rainny = estava chuvoso
*it will be rainny = estará chuvoso

*it's cold = está frio
*it was cold = estava frio
*it will be cold = estará frio

*it's hot = está quente
*it was hot = estava quente
*it will be hot = estará quente

Rules to the third person /Regras para a terceira pessoa

verbs ended in : /Verbos terminados em:

o,sh,ch = es (apenas no singular do tempo presente , acrescenta-se ES)

I go = eu vou /she goes = ela vai
I wash = eu lavo / she washes = ela lava
They watch = eles assistem/he watches = ele assiste

verbs ended in:

y = consonant before , you cut off the "y" and add "ies" (se antes do "y" vier uma consoante , devemos tirar o 'y" e acrescentar 'ies")

to cry = chorar

I cry = eu choro /he cries = ele chora

to fly = voar ,viajar

We fly = nós voamos,viajamos/she flies = ela voa,viaja

All the other verbs just add "s" (Para todos os outros verbos, apenas acrescente o "s")

to buy = comprar

*Suzana compra pão todos os dias.

to dry = secar

*Lorena dries his hands after wash them.
*Lorena seca as mãos após lava- las.
.....................................................................................

Revisão Gramatical - Verbos

Regular/Irregular/Participle

To eat = comer

* I eat chocolate and carrot cake(simple present)
*I ate chocolate and carrot cake(simple past)

To play = brincar,tocar,jogar

*I play piano very well
*I played piano very well

*Agora o verbo 'play" recebeu "ed' na forma do passado. é portanto um verbo regular.

To study = estudar

*I study English with J.B.
*I studied English with J.B.

To stay = ficar,permanecer

* I stayed at home yesterday.
*Eu fiquei em casa ontem.

**Verbo regular/passado com "ed".

To swim = nadar

*I swam at my friend's swimming pool.
*Eu nadei na piscina do meu amigo.

**Verbo irregular/passado sem 'ed"

To run = correr

*Gabriel ran when he saw his mother
*O Gabriel correu quando viu a mãe dele.

**Verbo irregular/passado sem 'ed".

To go out = sair (para se divertir)

*Suzana,Lorena and Anselmo went out after the class.
*Suzana,Lorena e Anselmo saíram após a aula.

**Verbo irregular/passado sem 'ed".

to sleep = dormir.

*Teacher J.B slept at his friend's house yesterday.
*O professor Jota dormiu na casa do amigo dele ontem.

**Verbo irregular/passado sem 'ed"

to smile = sorrir

*The girl smiled at me.
*A garota sorriu para mim.
**Verbo regular/final com "ed"

Did you have good dreams?

I know you are understanding what I am writing , for this reason I will keep doing it in English.
Well , this morning is not raining cats and dogs .
It's raining , but not too much.
Even though it isn't raining a lot , we won't have class today.
What's up?
I was supposed to buy an umbrella but I didn't buy it yet.
I will buy it today.
So, tomorrow there won't be any excuse to call it a day.
Have a nice day and see you tomorrow.

Monday Class - August 31th

Today we'll learn five new Phrasals verbs...and we'll have an intermediate conversation using these new verbs. Are you ready? Let's go!

2- to be running out of = estar acabando, ou ficando sem algo
3- to show off = se mostrar , se achar, se crescer
4- to turn up = comparecer
5- to get away with = se safar, escapar impune de algo

* I really like when you get up to turn up for my classes every week. I strongly believe that this is a strong signal that you won't give up your dream to speak English. There are a lot of people outside that use to show off by talking English in a very different way. They talk English using Brazilian structures and grammar. Even though we are able to understand what they say, they will be in the doghouse when they face a native american in an advanced conversation. They won't get away with it. As far as I'm concerned , they are running out of time .

* Anselmo, could you please wash the dishes, cook the lunch, feed the dog, take the baby to school and clean the house for me?

*** I can't do this, I give up!
*** It's too hard , I give up!
*** I don't wanna do this anymore, I give up!

* Why didn't Anselmo turn up for the class these days ?

*** I heard that he isn't turning up for class cos' he gave up to learn English.
*** As far as I'm concerned he didn't give up ; he was travelling through Europe , so he coldn't turn up for class these days.
.................................................................................
* Do you think that J.B uses to show off when he is teaching?

*** That's a tough question. Sometimes I think He is like that , sometimes I'm not that sure.
*** He doesn't want to show off, but He is really good at this.
*** Most of time he shows off, he thinks he is the best.
...............................................................................

* What are you running out of?

*** I'm running out of money , could you please help me to pay the bill?
*** I'm running out of gas, I better find a gas station .
*** I'm running out of sugar , could you buy some more?
..............................................................................

* What can't you get away with?

*** Yesterday I cheated on the test but somebody told J.B. and I couldn't get away with it.
*** Everybody knows when I'm telling a lie , especially when they look into my eyes ...you know, it's impossible to get away with it.
*** I always get away with everything I do.
.....................................................................................

* And I thought you had given up the course.

# No way teacher! As I told you before I'll keep studying till I know everything I am supposed to learn.

* Ok. Let's change the subject... Did you watch the game yesterday?

# Which game ? Corinthians against Botafogo or São Paulo against Atlético?

* Both.

# I think that the ref made a bad call and helped Botafogo.

* Yeah, the player scored with his hand ... but what about São Paulo's game?

# Sooner or later they would be defeated...we lost a great opportunity to be closer, much closer...

* I agree...São Paulo's supporters were showing off by changing our song to " The champion is back"

# I think that someday the " Gaviões da Fiel" will answer to this provokation cos' this song belongs to them...originally.

* Yeah, they won't get away with it. I mean , They will pay for it.

# I hope they don't use violence ... I don't like when they use violence to defend their view.

* I'm sorry to cut this short but I'm running out of time now. There is a student waiting me ...I gotta go.

# Ok teacher, Thanks a lot for your time.

* I see you tomorrow at seven ok?

# Alright, see you there!
.................................................

Second Conversation

# Why don't you go to your work by car?

* Well, I'd like to go , really, but ...you know ...I'm running out of gas.

# Why don't you go to the gas station?

* Now I can't cos' I'm running out of time. I have to take a bus.

# I'm not asking for you to go now. You can go when you get back home ...can't you?

* No , I can't.

# What is the matter?

* I'm running out of money.

# What time is it?

Eu e minha família fomos á praia no feriado passado.

............................................
*My last expression is "run into someone"...and this simply means to meet someone by chance. Now , in my travels many times I have gone to remote areas of the world...and by chance , by coincidence I have met people from my country.A great expression for that is "funny running into you here". To run into someone means that you didn't plan to meet them. You didn't sit at home in your country when you were planning your trip and say :" Ok I think on this future date I 'm going to meet somebody from my country in the strangest part of the world imaginable. No! It doesn't work like that! Sometimes it just happens by chance. Maybe it's happened to you.
......................................
*My last piece of information was with regard to the point of confusion about tennis in Steve in Brazil. You will recall that the vendor had referred to my running shoes as "tênis". Now, I came to learn as I was living in Brazil that tennis = tênis " was synonymous with running shoes. So, what has happened ? A culture has taken a word from English and has adapted and modified that word to suit its own culture and language. This happens many times and not just in Brazil . I've seen it happen with many different cultures, many different countries. Ok George , that is Steve in Brazil. I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as I did.
.......................................

Conditionals conversation

** Good Morning Anselmo! Did you study the conditionals sentences I taught you yesterday?

* I'm sorry teacher, I didn't. Actually I didn't have time to.

** If you study a little by yourself , you will get a better understanding.

* I know teacher. I would study , If I had time. Come to think of it... Have you ever bought the new camera you want too much?

** I would have bought it , If I had had two thousand dollars in my wallet yesterday.

* I don't have this amount but if you had told me , I would have found a way to help you to buy it.

** Don't worry about it. If you weren't married and hadn't two people to look after , I would ask your support. Come to think of family ... How are your wife and daughter?

* They would be better , If we didn't live in Cidade Tiradentes.

** I'm serious man!

* I'm not kidding! Sometimes I think that Lorena would grow happier, if we lived in a peaceful place. There are much violence in here.

** Violence is a strong reason to worry about ... I think that our government is not dealing with the problem the right way. If they had employed more cops, the streets would have been more peaceful.

* As far as I'm concerned , they only worry about us during the elections time. If we had elections every year , our lives would be interesting.

** Ok. I agree. I'm sorry to cut this short but I gotta go.

* Ok. Teacher. Will we have class tomorrow?

** Will you be at home , if I arrive before 8?

* I'm not sure. If you call me some minutes before coming, I will give you an answer.

** I'm afraid I don't have credits to make you a call.

* If you don't mind , we can have this lesson next week then.

** Deal! Don't forget to take a look on your blog and study the conditionals.

* Ok Teacher! If I don't study , I won't learn , alright?

** Yeah! You would be a better English speaker if you studied more.

* I got it! Hurry up , teacher! If you don't go now, you will get late at your appointment. Have a nice day!

** Thanks, likewise!
